About the Artist and Creation of Gag Me Comics

Hi, my name is James W. Carver, I am the creator of Gag Me Comics and the Gag Me Comics.com website, where I display my collection of eclectic comics and cartoons.

I was born in California in the mid-1950’s. My father was a doctoral candidate at University of Southern California and my mother, a former child actress, worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. Surprisingly, I remember quite a bit about my years in California, even though my residence there was short-lived.

Cold Feet

I was five years old when our family moved to a flat, wind-swept, suburb of Chicago, Illinois. To my dismay, I had been transported from the warm, western confines to nine long years of cold, wintry gales; which included Chicago’s biggest recorded snowfall!

I drew extensively in those days, usually bad drawings of World War Two military aircraft. I dabbled in comics back then, but, unfortunately… I wasn’t funny, which is an affliction that still haunts me to this day!

Humid

In the late 1960’s, we moved to Webster Groves, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, where I found the climate, although very humid, to be much more to my liking. I took a few art classes in high school, but I was too busy messing around to be serious about anything. Somehow I graduated from high school, but they probably just wanted me out of there.

Scholar

After a year of malingering at a junior college, I attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO (aka “Mizzou”). I did take a few art courses while at Mizzou but I never did anything with comics. Somehow, I graduated with a science degree.

Where’s the Beach?

Fast forward to early 1990’s, I moved to South Florida for an entrepreneurial effort that turned out to be a big lie. In desperation, I became the Assistant Manager of a large restaurant chain, which is another story. I hated this job because my salary hardly paid the bills, the hours sucked and upper management was corrupt. I started drawing comics again, but I never submitted any of them.

Rejected

Eventually, I returned to St. Louis where, after a few years, I gathered a representative portion of my comic collection and mailed it to the various syndicates. I was promptly and rudely rejected. In fact, I felt that their rejection letters bordered on botheration.

Undeterred

Undeterred, I decided to build the GagMeComics.com website, so that I could impose my rejected Gag Me Comics onto the masses!

Thank You!
